Bank and Credit Card Reconciliation

If your books don't match the bank to the penny, they aren't done.

Reconciling means checking your books against the statement, line by line, until they agree. Not close. Exactly.

Every month I reconcile every bank, credit card and loan account to its statement. The difference has to be $0.00. If it isn't, I find out why before the month is finished.

When a reconciliation lies

QuickBooks will let you mark an account reconciled when it isn't. A forced reconciliation looks fine on the screen and throws every month after it off. Finding those is one of the first things I do in a cleanup.

What you get

The reconciliation report for every account, every month, kept on file. You or your CPA can have it whenever you ask. Then the month is locked, so nothing changes by accident.

Questions

QuickBooks matches my transactions for me. Isn't that the same thing?

Matching is a start. A reconciliation checks the ending balance against the statement, and that's where missing and doubled transactions show up.

What do you need from me?

One list each month, so you're never guessing: bank statements, card statements, loan statements.

Not sure when your accounts last matched the bank?

It costs nothing to find out where your books stand.

I go through your QuickBooks and show you what I find, whether or not you hire me. If your books are clean enough, I'll also show you a few quick moves that could put more money in your pocket.
